Another weekend is in the books, and this one had a little bit of everything.
Saturday Night in Spencerville
Saturday night, the boys and I made our way out to Spencerville, Ontario, for an evening at SpencerCity Joe’s Bar & Grill.
First off, what a cool spot! Their back patio is beautiful, and the stage looks like somebody crossed an old moonshine shack with a combine. I’m still not exactly sure what to call it, but I know one thing: it’s a great stage to play rock ’n’ roll on.
It was a quieter Saturday night, with the Spencerville Fair happening that weekend, but that didn’t stop us from having a good time and doing what we do.
One of my favourite moments of the evening came from a young family having dinner on the patio. Their kids were fascinated by the band and especially interested in my rather large “cello.” 😂
Close enough!
Those little interactions are sometimes the things I remember most from a gig.
A special thanks to Janice Kingston for the great Facebook post about the show and for capturing some photos of us while we were playing. Photo credit to Janice Kingston for the shots we’re sharing from the evening. Thanks, Janice!
And thanks to everyone at SpencerCity Joe’s for having us. We’d definitely like to make our way back next summer, although maybe we’ll pick a weekend that isn’t during fair season!
A Little Rockabilly Road Trip
Sunday, I traded playing rockabilly for listening to it.
My wife Tina and I, along with our friends Elan and Pete, headed down to Morristown, New Jersey, to catch the Stray Cats.
For anyone who doesn’t know the Stray Cats, here’s probably the easiest way I can explain their importance:
The Stray Cats are to rockabilly what Led Zeppelin is to classic rock.
They helped bring rockabilly roaring back to life for an entirely new generation, and they’ve been a huge influence on the music I’ve loved and played for years.
The show was fantastic. The band sounded great, especially considering they were wrapping up the summer portion of their tour. From what I’ve seen, it looks like they’ll be hitting the road again this fall.
After playing rockabilly on Saturday night, getting to see one of the bands that helped define the modern version of this music on Sunday wasn’t a bad way to finish a rock ’n’ roll weekend!
NEXT UP: The Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll!
This Saturday, August 22, Bogdan, David and I return to Lower Beverley Lake Park in Lyndhurst for an afternoon of live music.
We’ll be bringing our “Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll” show, digging into some of the songs and artists that helped start this whole crazy thing in the first place.
- Saturday, August 22
- Lower Beverley Lake Park, Lyndhurst, ON
- Afternoon Show
- The Birth of Rock ’n’ Roll
And we’re not slowing down when August ends.
September is shaping up to be another good month for Cadillac Rumble:
- Sept. 12 – The Keystorm Pub, Brockville
- Sept. 19 – Private Event
- Sept. 26 – Outdoor afternoon show at Goldwyn’s, Kemptville
We’ll have more details on those shows soon.
As always, I want to thank everyone who follows what we’re doing, comes out to the shows, shares our posts, supports the venues that hire us, and continues to support our little rock ’n’ roll band.
Bogdan, David and I really do appreciate it.
Until next time, keep rockin’, keep rollin’, and we’ll see you somewhere down the road.
Scott
